What Yahoo Directory Retirement Means For Your Reviewer

Long before Google was a notable source, several internet users browsed the web by the Yahoo Directory. Yahoo Directory wasn’t a search engine but more of an online database of websites selected by Yahoo and presented to the browsers as an organized list.  These lists were sorted by multiple topics from shopping, to education, and resources. You could navigate through the topics by clicking one which would then display the websites on the individual lists under the particular topic.

As the years have passed, and the internet and Yahoo have evolved, several users have found the system to be confusing and overpopulated by spam-like link sellers. This growing reputation made the decision to put the Yahoo Directory to rest a little bit easier. Yahoo stated the decision by explaining, “While we are still committed to connecting users with the information they’re passionate about, our business has evolved…we will retire the Yahoo Directory.”

Following Yahoo’s statement began the transition of Yahoo Directory to Aabaco Small Business, which is a service company that moves to get small business on their service plan instead of helping consumers find their business online.

For our clients with Reviewer, we will be updating the product to reflect changes within the Yahoo system. Since Yahoo now shows Yelp reviews instead of its own user-submitted reviews, we will no longer be encouraging your clients to leave reviews on Yahoo.

Additionally, Yahoo has entered into a partnership with Microsoft and now gets its search results from Bing. This is important for our SEO clients as now there are essentially only two major search engines that we optimize for.

Facebook Bluetooth Beacon


Facebook has announced a new feature Place Tips. Place Tips is a Facebook mobile feature that allows users to see localized tips and news feeds in and around nearby stores, restaurants, and other businesses. The feature lets users see pictures and status updates from friends who have visited that location before, as well as other relevant information such as posts from the location’s Facebook page and more.

What's The Future Of Search?


Before Google there was Yahoo. Before Yahoo there was Alta Vista. Search has come a long way since the early years of the Internet. And with so much more content online than ever before, search engines are finding ways to bring the most relevant information to you as quickly as possible.

Reviews Are Your Word of Mouth Tool


According to a recent survey on customer reviews by BrightLocal (,

92% of consumers read online reviews for local businesses

38% read reviews on their mobile device

73% of consumers form an opinion of the business after reading 1 to 6 reviews

69% of consumers believe that reviews older than 3 months are no longer relevant

80% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations

So what can we take away from this? The more good reviews a business has, the more customers they are likely to receive. And since 69% of consumers believe that reviews older than 3 months are no longer relevant, it’s extremely important for a business to maintain a constant level of review gathering.

We also learned from Doug, our Google AdWords representative, that having a Google+ page full of reviews (along with other factors) definitely helps a business maintain a top place on the Google Map listings in the search results. This is even more important now that Google only shows the top three local listings on the map.

David vs. Goliath in the World of SEO

Are local businesses getting squeezed out of search results by larger websites?

When it comes to search, many local businesses rely on “generic” keywords such as “plumber”, “dentist”, and “attorney”, or “service” keywords such as “radiator repair”, “teeth whitening”, and “divorce lawyer”. But while these keywords are critical for local businesses, many of them are getting shut out of search results by larger websites. These larger websites include news or publisher sites, national business directories, large national advertisers, and national or local government sites.

At the heart of the issue is the searcher’s intent. When someone enters “teeth whitening” into Google, the search engine must determine what the person wants. Do they want to know what’s involved in the process, do they want to find a product that will whiten their teeth, or do they want a local dentist? Without a clear understanding of what the searcher wants, Google will respond with more generic results, squeezing local businesses out. For these generic terms, all three major search engines (Google, Bing, and Yahoo) show an average of just two to three local results, with the large websites dominating the rankings.

The best hope for local businesses lie with “long tail” search terms. These include “emergency 24hr plumber”, “private cosmetic dentist”, “top DUI attorney”. When using these terms, local businesses get an average of 50% or more visibility in the search results. And when combined with “geo-modified” terms the results are even better.

For example, the term “cosmetic dentist phoenix az” will give the searcher almost an entire page of local results in all three search engines. And with mobile search now outranking all other search platforms, search engines now base many of their results on your location, further providing local businesses with an advantage over the larger websites.

So what conclusion can we gather from this? Long tail terms offer the best organic ranking opportunity, so local businesses need a solid content and SEO strategy that delivers results for these long tail terms.

Two Months After Mobilegeddon: Google Isn’t Finished

For those who are thinking that Google’s focus on promoting mobile-friendly sites has reached its plateau, you will be interested to know that this is just the beginning.

Although Google recently announced that their mobile algorithm update is now fully rolled out worldwide, they seem to be indicating that other factors surrounding mobile search are being considered.

They have begun testing “slow to load” warning labels in mobile search results, so even if you have a mobile-friendly site it won’t necessarily help in your rankings if it takes too long to load. And with Google’s recent announcement that “more Google searches take place on mobile devices than on computers in 10 countries including the US and Japan,” there will definitely be more mobile ranking factors that come into play.

So what has the impact of Mobilegeddon been so far? Enterprise SEO tool BrightEdge tracked 20,000 non-mobile friendly URLs and two weeks later found about 17% of those pages were no longer seen on the first page of search results. That number seems low, but that’s only two weeks later and the algorithm update hadn’t fully propagated worldwide.

Our own statistics have shown moderate declines in the last two months across non-mobile friendly sites, with more than a few major impacts on rankings. These declines seem to be building each week and will only get worse over time.

Google seems to be nowhere near letting up on their mobile search emphasis, and now that they have confirmed that the majority of searches take place on mobile devices, there’s no excuse now to put off making your site mobile-friendly.
